A new approach to in-person evaluation for an untraditional user group NGO Volunteers, parents and children at Red Barnet’s after-school clubs Allow untrained volunteers to collect user feedback in a way that’s tailored to the users’ needs To help Red Barnet, an NGO working with children’s welfare, gather the most useful data from the users of their after-school clubs, we devised a new approach that combines the benefits of in-person, facilitated evaluation sessions with robust data collection – and to make the evaluation process fun and engaging for the key demographic – children – we used DiBL’s flexible toolset to add in simple game elements as well. All in one solution. Our custom tool is set up to easily allow Red Barnet’s volunteers to run separate, facilitated evaluation sessions with users, on location. The first pilots show that from the volunteer’s perspective, it’s just as easy as playing a slide show – but one that lets users interact with the “slides”, whether they’re taking part in fun, collaborative image quizzes, or answering full-fledged surveys. This lets Red Barnet gather the data they need, from users they may not have email addresses or phone numbers for – and who may not have either. To accommodate a wider range of use cases, the tool is designed in a way that lets multiple users share a single device, but during gameplay and when answering survey questions, where they take turns answering, and are still clearly differentiated in the data. The tool is set up with different versions for children and adults, asking different questions. However, both versions include most of the same gameplay elements, to make the evaluation sessions a shared experience for everyone. Lastly, our robust editor lets Red Barnet easily update survey questions – or even gameplay elements – themselves, while our server architecture ensures maximum backwards compatibility of the data, even as questions and content change.
